My first memory of love for the sculpted form was a simple little rounded shaped owl that I cupped in my hand.  
The modern West generally associates owls with wisdom. This link goes back at least as far as Ancient Greece, where Athens, noted for art and scholarship, and Athena, Athens' patron goddess and the goddess of wisdom, had the owl as a symbol.

The artist does not worship the creature or believe in the goddess.  This piece is intended to convey the message that true wisdom is gained by immersing oneself in God’s Word and knowing him IS understanding.  The barn owl with its heart-shaped face is inclined toward the man reading under the tree.  

Job 28:12    But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
Proverbs 9:10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.  Psalm 111:10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever.
1 Kings 4:34  Men came from all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.  Ecclesiastes 7:12  For wisdom is protection just as money is protection, But the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the lives of its possessors.

Jeremiah 8:9  The wise men are put to shame, They are dismayed and caught; Behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD, And what kind of wisdom do they have?  1 Corinthians 1:21  For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.                  
1 Corinthians 2:6  Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away...
